Hurricane Irene!

Last night we had officially decided that Hurricane Irene was just a big flop. All the flashlights, batteries, bread, fuel and water were gone from the stores for nothing. Just a little rain.

Well...we got up this morning, went down the hill about a block from our house and changed our minds.

These are some things that we saw: (Remember this is after the river had already gone down a lot.

Some of you may recognize the bridge by our house. Normally it is actually very high above the water. Last night the water level had been as high as where I'm standing taking the picture.

Jesse Family Reunion- do you remember flying airplanes here? The lake used to be a big grassy field.

Isaac's sad little playground! The slides and swings were completely underwater and now are filled with mud. The river is actually supposed to be on the other side of all those trees.

This poor place, The Upper Valley Zen Center, is still partially underwater. It's less than 100 yards from Eric's work. Luckily his building was completely dry.

It's hard to tell from the picture, but this railroad bridge is...well, no longer usable.

There were lot's of homes that were completely flooded- there are roads that are closed and covered with river silt because they were flooded as well. Luckily they opened one of the bridges up so I can get to the store. We now feel very blessed to live on this steep hill that we had cursed so many times during the winter storms!

My goodness! I'm glad you're doing ok. It's also really good that Eric's work is dry! Good luck to your town on recovery from the damage!
